Abstract
1401141 Underwater storage tanks SUMITOMO SHIPBUILDING & MACHINERY CO Ltd 6 March 1973 [6 March 1972 (2) 26 April 1972] 10897/73 Heading E1H A storage tank system, e.g. subaquatic for oil, comprises at least one hollow body 1, e.g. steel tubing, substantially embedded in the ground and having a lid 2 with a connection 3 for the liquid to be stored and a connection 4 for supplying or discharging a displacement liquid, e.g. sea water, of greater density than the stored liquid. In Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), a plurality of tanks are driven into the sea bed, some being centrally located and projecting above sea level to support a platform carrying control valves for pipes connecting the tanks to sea water, cleaning liquid, and oil supply and discharge pipes and pumps. The tanks may be driven into the ground by a pile-driver and the spoil removed from within the tank by a jet lifter pipe, (23) Fig. 4 (not shown), inserted through one of the lid apertures. When the tank top is to be flush with the sea bed surface, a second tubing section is secured to the tank tubing section during driving, and is removed when the tank section has reached the required depth, Figs. 6A to E (not shown). After removal of the spoil within the tank, concrete may be pumped through a pipe to form the tank bottom. In Fig. 7 (not shown), a vessel has equipment for installing the tank system.
