Abstract

1429312 Pile driving; earth-jetting apparatus HOLLANDSCHE BETON GROEP NV 22 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 29392/72 Headings E1F and E1H When driving a hollow pile 1 having an open toe-end, the plug 3 of soil forced up into the pile is maintained below a certain length by directing a jet or jets of water 4 generally transversely of the longitudinal axis of the pile, thus limiting the amount of friction generated by the soil plug. The water is supplied by a pipe 7 to a nozzle or a ring having inwardly and outwardly directed jets Fig. 2 (not shown). The jets may be inclined to the axis of the pile at angles less than right angles. When the pile 1 has been driven to the required depth the plug 3 may be compacted or consolidated by driving a pin 11, Fig. 4, into the plug, e.g. by hydraulic pressure acting on a piston 12 in a cylinder 10, forcing the pin to penetrate a guide disc 13. The pin 11 may be driven by a hammer, Figs. 6, 10 (not shown). The plug may also be consolidated by injecting a liquid via apertured pipes secured to the inner wall of the pile adjacent its lower end, which liquid expands on hardening or on contact with water. Examples given are grout comprising expanding cement, colloidal solutions of silicates, and solutions of phenoplastic resins.
