Abstract

1,238,181. Breaking-down appliances. WM. PARK & CO. FORGEMASTERS Ltd. 3 Jan., 1969 [24 Feb., 1968], No. 9067/68. Heading E1F. A device for breaking material, e.g. coal, rock or ore, comprises a sleeve 12 which is insertable into a hole h in the material, a bar 10 slidably disposed in the sleeve and having a conical end 11 which engages a correspondingly tapered, split part of the sleeve whereby movement of the rod relative to the sleeve expands the latter to anchor the device, and means for driving a wedge 14 into the hole between a wall of the latter and the sleeve 12. The bar 10 is attached to a hydraulically operated piston 16 disposed in a cylinder 15 which has a pivoted catch 19 for engaging a lug 13 on the sleeve. In operation a part 20 on the cylinder 15 engages the sleeve 12 while the piston 16 is moved to anchor the sleeve in the hole, the cylinder is then moved away from the sleeve and the wedge 14, which embraces an arcuate part of the sleeve, is inserted. The cylinder is then moved to force the wedge into the hole, and finally the catch 19 is engaged with the lug 13 and the piston and bar moved to permit withdrawal of the sleeve from the hole. The bar 10 may be in two parts to suit holes of different depths. The device may be powered by explosive means instead of hydraulically.
