Heading H2B In an air-break circuit-breaker having an arc-chute 17 into which an arc drawn between the separated circuit-breaker contacts 11, 12 is driven along arc-runners 15, 16 connected to the circuit-breaker terminals 13, 14, an auxiliary contact gap 29, 30 is connected between one arc-runner 16 and its associated circuit-breaker terminal 14. The auxiliary contact gap 29, 30 is provided with arc-extinguishing means, e.g. a gas-evolving tube 28, and is opened through a lost-motion connection by the circuit-breaker operating mechanism when the main moving contact has reached the end of its opening travel.
