Abstract

1,088,371. Paper-making machines. WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. and B. RADVAN. April 22, 1964 [April 25, 1963], No. 16394/63. Heading D2A. Means are provided in a paper-making machine whereby the paper stock flowing from the headbox to the wire of the machine is caused to execute an hydraulic jump, the turbulence of which improves the fibre distribution and formation of the paper sheet. Stock from a headbox 11 flows up an inclined apron 15 towards the breast roll 17 and wire 16, hydraulic jump occurring at 21 just prior to deposition of the stock on the wire. Deckles may be provided extending over, at most, only, part of the sides of the apron 15 from the wire end. Alternatively air deckles may be used at the sides of the apron 15. In alternative embodiments (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) the apron or bed upon which the stock flows from the slice is horizontal and a transversely disposed barrier or obstruction is arranged to cause the hydraulic jump to occur.
