Abstract

1,085,307. Cleaning tubes lining a furnace wall. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. Sept. 29, 1965 [Oct. 20, 1964], No. 41435/65. Heading F2N. A method of cleaning slag off tubes 4 lining a furnace wall which is equipped with means 19 for directing a jet of cleaning fluid across said tubes, comprises removing slag from the tubes in an area immediately adjacent said means and then directing a jet of cleaning fluid across said tubes so it operates against the edge of the remaining slag layer to remove the slag beyond said area. Steam is passed through a control valve 17 to a retractible and rotatable wall blower 19 and to fixed deslaggers, each comprising a steam chamber 24, apertured tube webs 14, and baffles 27. Steam is directed by the baffles 27 of the latter intermediate the slag layer and the tubes to clean an area immediately adjacent the wall blower. The jet from the nozzle 20 of the wall blower, which nozzle may be rotatable through a full revolution or only a portion thereof and is positioned 1¢ inch inward of the furnace tubes, then acts on the edge of the remaining slag layer to remove the same. In an alternative method, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), a jet of steam ejected at a pressure of about 100 p.s.i. across the tubes from the nozzle of a wall blower positioned such that the nozzle centre-line is ¢ to ¥ inch inward of the crown of the furnace tubes. This jet removes slag immediately adjacent the blower. The nozzle inset is then increased to between 2 and 3 inches and the steam pressure to between 250 and 300 p.s.i. to remove the slag from the tubes beyond said immediately adjacent area.
