[Also in Division B8] Apparatus for binding a wire round a coil or bundle comprises twisting grippers arranged to project one on each side of the coil to receive a wire fed in a direction at right angles to the axis of rotation of the grippers, the grippers, after cutting the wire, drawing it about the article and coming together to twist it. Further cutting means severs the wire ends from the twist. Rollers 30, (31), see also Fig. 2 (not shown), feed the wire through a guide bore 20A into downwardly opening grooves, Fig. 5 (not shown), in the jaws 16, 17 of twister arms 4, 5, raised with the twister head 2, to the chaindotted position to extend above the coil C. Contiguous with the jaws are cutting elements 18, 19 having wire receiving bores 18A, 19A. The arms then descend and come together beneath the coil, one of the elements 18, 19 having out the wire adjacent the guide bore 20A, the front face of which also acts as a cutter. The head 2 then rotates with a shaft 1 to complete the twist. Cutters (8), (9) mounted in slideways 6, 7 on the head and at least one of which is radially slidable, sever the wire ends. The cutters may also fold the twist down on to the bundle and may be altered in height to vary the length of twist. The twister head is rotated by a crank-driven rack 23 and a pinion 22, and jaw closure is derived from pins 13, 14 on plates 11 (12) rotating with the head but fixed against vertical sliding, acting on the arms 4, 5. During twisting, the head 2 is freely supported on a spring 35. The cutters 18, 19 may be magnetized to prevent dislodgement of the wire after initial cutting. The apparatus may be fixed, or suspended for application to an article to be bound. The wire length is adjustable by adjusting the cutters 18, 19 on the arms and replacing the element 20A.
