Abstract

1377775 Making coil springing; shearing BIRNAM PRODUCTS Ltd 24 April 1973 [19 April 1972 6 July 1972 31 Jan 1973] 18146/72 31612/72 and 4882/73 Headings B3E and B3W Apparatus for making coil springing, the coils of which are of the same hand, comprises a device for feeding wire to a coiling station and means for axially twisting the wire through 180 degrees while the feed is interrupted during coiling. The wire is fed through straightening rollers 3, Fig. 9, to feeding rollers 2. An adjustable deflection roller unit 5 is provided on a coiling head 1 for passing the wire into a guide shoe 6. The unit comprises rollers 19 and a roller 20, Fig. 7, mounted on an adjustable arm 17, Fig. 1. The wire is then passed through adjustable grooved rollers 7, is deflected by a roller 8, and then passes through eyelet 9 of a pitching blade 10. The twisting is performed using a fork 11 mounted on a shaft 12 driven by a shaft 13, the fork being rotatably movable about and reciprocally movable along its longitudinal axis. Either the fork 11 is twisted through 180 degrees while gripping the wire or, in an alternative embodiment, Fig. 14 (not shown), coiling head (301) is rotated about axis (X-X). The pitching blade 10 is adjustably rotatable about a horizontal axis by means of an adjustable arm 14. The completed coil springing is deflected away from the coiling station by a deflector 15. The diameter of the coils may be varied by adjustment'of plate 21 and/or slide 22 of rollers 7, 8 respectively, and a programmed cam system, Fig. 11 (not shown), controls the number of coils in each spring as well as movement of shafts 12, 13. A cutter mechanism, Figs. 20, 21, is provided for cutting off lengths of coiled springing. The mechanism comprises a cutter member 401 and a link member 404. A cam 406 is pivotally mounted at 405 to the member 404 and engages an adjustable cam follower 407. The cutter member is connected to a base member 403 by a pin 402 and a spring 409. Piston 414 is activated via pneumatic valves in cylinder 413 by cam action for lifting one of the wire driving rollers and descends to rotate member 404 about pivot pin 405 which results in anti-clockwise rotation of the cutter member 401 so that blade 416 cuts the wire at eyelet 417. Movement of member 404 opens a microswitch 421 to raise the piston 414 ready for a further cut after a predetermined number of springs have been formed.
