Abstract
1,081,337. Valve gear; driving gear. VILLIERS ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 24, 1965, No. 17390/65. Heading FIB. The drive from an I. C. engine crank-shaft 10 is transmitted by gearing 14, 15 to the engine cam-shaft 11 and from thence by gearing 28, 33 to an output shaft 30 which is coaxial with the crank-shaft. An idler gear may be interposed between gears 28 and 33 so that the crank and output shafts rotate in different directions. An intermediate casing 16, secured to the crankcase 12, includes a web 19 provided with hollow bosses 20 and 22 which act as bearings for the crank-shaft and an extension 23 of the cam-shaft respectively. An end casing 24, secured to the casing 16, is formed with hollow bosses 32 and 26, which receive a ball bearing 31 for the output shaft 30 and a bearing 27a for a spigot 27 formed on the cam-shaft 11. The gear 28 is received on splines 29 formed on the cam-shaft extension 23. The output shaft 30 is formed with a spigot 34 located within a hollow end 35 of the crankshaft with the interposition of roller bearings 36. The gearing 28, 33 is lubricated by oil overflowing into the lower part of casing 16 from the engine sump.
