Abstract

1364454 I C engine timing gear PERKINS ENGINES Ltd 2 Nov 1971 [10 Nov 1970] 53522/70 Heading F1B A reciprocating engine comprises a crankcase defining a timing gear cavity 16 between adjacent cylinders of a bank of cylinders, a crank-shaft 42 and cam-shaft (50), Fig.4 (not shown) with timing wheels 40, 60 drivingly connected with each other at least partially within the cavity which has an opening on at least one side of the crank-case closed by a load bearing cover member 66 on which is supported a wheel 86 to drive an auxiliary device, the wheel 86 being drivably connected to the crank-shaft. A second auxiliary device drive wheel 98 may be provided on the same side of the engine and two more wheels 108, 112 on the other side of the engine. Each of the drive wheels 86, 98, 108, 112 may drive two auxiliary devices, one mounted one each side of the cover members 66 and 106, examples of the devices being given in the Specification. Drive to the wheels 86, 98, 108, 112 may be transmitted by gear-wheels, friction drive wheels, worm gears, friction belts and pulleys.
