Abstract

In a process of forming a sintered metal coating on a metal substrate e.g. ferrous base, the substrate is treated with an aqueous solution containing sodium and/or potassium poly-metaphosphate, the powdered metal is distributed on the treated surface which is then dried, compacted and sintered. The metal powder coating may be Al, Ti, Zr, Ni, Cr, Cu, stainless steel or alloys of any of these metals and the powder is preferably minus 200 mesh. The substrate may be coated with the phosphate and then coated with the metal powder from a fluidized bed or alternatively the metal powder may be suspended in the phosphate solution which is applied by spraying, brushing, rolling or curtain coating. The solution contains 0.01 - 2g/l of the phosphate and may also contain the following; paraffins, olefins, aliphatic monohydric alcohols, monocarboxylic acids, monocarboxyl compounds, monoamines and mononitriles which impart hydrophobic properties to the coating. Surface active agents may also be added. The applied coating is dried at 50 DEG - 450 DEG C., compacted by rolling, die drawing or roller die rolling and then sintered at 400 DEG - 1100 DEG C. in vacuum or an inert atmosphere.
