Abstract

1298173 Spray-treating metals AMCHEM PRODUCTS Ltd 19 May 1971 [20 May 1970] 15740/71 Heading C7U A conversion coating is formed on a metal by spraying it from an orifice on a hand-held wand, with (a) cleaning solution at 300 to 600 p.s.i.g. and 70 to 150‹F, and subsequently with (b) an appropriate chemical coating forming solution at 20 to 80 p.s.i.g. and 110 to 150‹F. A passivating spraying may then follow, e.g. at 20 to 80 p.s.i.g. and 130 to 160‹F. The metal surface may be ferrous or zinc, the cleaning solution may be alkaline and contain dissolved and/or suspended Ti salts, e.g. in colloidal form, and the coating solution may be a nitrite-accelerated zinc phosphate solution. Spraying of all three solutions is usually for 20 to 40 seconds, and preferably all are sprayed at the same temperature, from the same wand, which may have different nozzles for different solutions and pressures. Spraying with aqueous rinse solution may precede and/or follow application of (b) above.
