Abstract

A high tenacity austenitic steel comprises: .C.0.31-0.57% .Si.0.11-1.91% .Mn.6.4-11.9% .Ni.6.1-11.1% .Cr.16.0-22.0% .W.0.40-2.1% .N.0.09-0.59% .B.0.0051-0.22% .S.0.01-0.12% with the proviso that Mn + Si is 12 - 19% and C + Si + W + N + S is 1.4 - 4.2%. Ti, Al, Cu and V may be present in total amount up to 3%, and also Mo up to 1.2% and Nb and/or Ta up to 0.45%. The steel may be heat treated at 1020 - 1180 DEG C. for about one hour and then cooled e.g. with water and then held at 700 - 780 DEG C. for 4 - 24 hours. The steels may be used for internal combustion engine valves, diesel engine precombustion chamber mouthpieces, turbine rotors and turbo charger blades.
