Abstract

An austenitic steel which has improved strength at high temperature and a process for obtaining such a steel. The objective of the invention is to provide a steel exhibiting both suitable mechanical characteristics associated with an improved resistance to corrosive agents, and a process for obtaining the said steel and for producing mechanical components. This objective is attained with the aid of an austenitic steel characterised in that it comprises especially (% by weight): - a carbon content lower than 0.4%, - a chromium content higher than 22%, - one or more carbide-forming elements chosen from the group consisting of niobium, titanium, tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium, the content of which is lower than 2.5%, - 0.40 to 0.60% of nitrogen, - 4 to 15% of nickel, - 2 to 10% of manganese, the balance of the combined constituents being such that the austenitic structure obtained is completely single-phase. The process according to the invention is characterised in that it consists in performing on an austenitic steel of abovementioned composition a dissolution of the constituents at a temperature of between 1000 and 1230 DEG C followed by a rapid cooling. It may additionally consist in carrying out a treatment for stabilising the structure at a temperature of between 720 and 860 DEG C for 1 to 50 hours. The present invention applies particularly to the manufacture of valves for motor vehicle engines.
