Abstract

1,076,220. Stabilizing ships. JOHN J. McMULLEN ASSOCIATES Inc. Aug. 31, 1965 [Oct. 15, 1964], No. 55607/66. Divided out of 1,075,836. Heading B7M. A passive stabilizer for a ship comprises an elongated athwartships tank (12), Fig. 1 (not shown) in which are positioned liquid transfer control means comprising a horizontal plate (18) extending across the tank and spaced from the bottom (16), top (14) and ends (15) of the tank and an upstanding transverse member (26) extending from each end of the plate to thetop of the tank. The tank in use is partially filled with liquid to a static level (23) above the height of the plate (18). At least two air holes (28) are provided in the end portion of the tank and in the embodiment of Fig. 1 each transverse member (26) has an end extending below the plate (18). In other embodiments the liquid transfer control means include means for selectively changing the cross-sectional area of the liquid transfer passage between the plate (18) and the bottom (16) of the tank.
