Abstract

1,084,760. Stabilizing ships. JOHN J. McMULLEN ASSOCIATES Inc. March 25, 1966 [March 30, 1965], No. 13359/66. Addition to 1,005,535. Headings B7M and B7S. In a vessel having transverse framing a passive stabilizer comprises two spaced liquidtight plates (40, Figs. 3 and 4) arranged vertically between two decks (22, 24) and extending transversely across the vessel to define with the sides thereof an elongated enclosed tank with its principal dimension transverse to the axis of roll of the vessel, at least one longitudinal bulkhead (32) connected between said plates, a plurality of elongated openings (42, also in Fig. 5, not shown) in the bulkhead having their greater dimensions positioned vertically, and a body of liquid partially filling said tank whereby said openings dissipate kinetic energy from the portion of liquid transferring therethrough in response to the roll of the vessel. Openings (44) may be provided at the top of the bulkhead for the passage of air, and openings (46) may also be provided at the bottom. The tank may include a wash bulkhead (34) parallel to and outboard of the longitudinal bulkhead and provided with openings (48, also in Fig. 6, not shown) each about twice the size of the openings (42) in the longitudinal bulkhead.
