Abstract

[Also in Division F1] In a method of manufacturing the head or block of a reciprocating machine, such as an internal combustion engine, having inlet and exhaust valve passages, the passages are formed by thin-walled tubular inserts 19, 20 around which the head or block is cast. The inserts are located and held by a core 22 which is then positioned in a mould in which the head or block is cast. The inserts are of tubular form having a smooth internal surface free from irregularities and are made from a heat- and corrosion-resistant material such as high nickel content alloys. The ends of the inserts 19 and 20 which lie within the combustion chamber 11 of the head may be flared to form seats for respective poppet valves 14, 15. Alternatively, separate valve seats may be held in the inserts. The inserts may be extended beyond the head or block of the engine to form inlet and exhaust manifolds (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown).
