A filler valve for a liquefied gas lighter comprises a porous elastic sponge 3 normally urged by the flange 7 of a spring - loaded plunger 2 against an annular portion 8 of a member 1 which is fixable to a wall (not shown) of the lighter fuel reservoir, so that as the plunger 2 is moved downwards (as shown) by a fuel supply container 6, the flange 7 disengages from the sponge 3 which expands and allows the exhaust therethrough of residual gas but not of liquefied gas from the reservoir to the atmosphere, when the pressure in the fuel reservoir becomes excessive. The plunger 2 has an axial passage 4 and a transverse passage 12 through which liquefied gas from the supply container 6 is discharged into the lighter reservoir. In the closed position of the valve, the compressed sponge 3 seals off the residual gas passage, and the liquefied gas passage 12 is above the sponge 3. In another embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), as the plunger 2 is depressed by a limited amount, the sponge 3 is initially decompressed but then a tapered section of the shaft of the plunger 2 compresses the sponge 3 so that the porosity of the sponge is decreased. The sponge 3 passes residual gas when a certain pressure is reached in the reservoir.
