Abstract

1,159,600. Fluid pressure control valve &c. BENDIX-WESTINGHOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE CO. 31 Oct., 1966 [5 Nov., 1965], No. 48742/66. Heading F2V. In a valve, for controlling the delivery discharge of a compressor, fluid under pressure supplied to an inlet 16 passes through a chamber 18, ducts 30 and then raises a check valve 32 before entering, through duct 14, a fluid pressure reservoir, (not shown). As pressure within the reservoir, and consequently chamber 18, builds up, it is transmitted via ducts 52 and 56 to an annular groove 54 disposed within a member 25 closing an exhaust aperture 22. This pressure acts, through a resilient annular O-ring 58, on a split expanding metal ring 60 which, as a result, expands outwardly and into abutment with the upstanding flanges 48 of a U-shaped container 46, the exhaust closure member 25 being disposed within this container. Upon the pressures within the reservoir and chamber 18 becoming substantially equal, the forces acting on the opposed faces of a pistonlike member 28 cancel out and those acting on member 25 then become sufficient to overcome the closing bias of a spring 41 and so raise member 25 from its seat 24. Thereafter these forces act on the whole surface area of member 25 and that of the projecting ring 60 to ensure a rapid opening. Once the pressure within chamber 18 drops, the same happens within groove 54 and so members 58 and 60 retract and hence do not inhibit the return of member 25 to its seating, this return commencing when the reservoir pressure falls below a certain predetermined value. The metal ring 60 may be replaced by an annular garter spring (72, Fig. 4, not shown) which is coated and filled with rubber.
