[Also in Division B8] In forming a container top (see Division B8), a sheet metal blank is provided with an upstanding peripheral wall 31<SP>1</SP> having an outward flange 32<SP>1</SP> for seaming on to the body wall of the can, and the cross-wall formed by the central area of the blank is subjected to drawing and forming operations in which a ledge 530<SP>1</SP> is formed together with a grooved portion G<SP>1</SP>, the bottom wall B<SP>1</SP> of which is then punched in order to separate the central panel comprising elements B<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>1</SP> and 36C<SP>1</SP>. Thereafter, the central panel is flattened and, after a supporting flange F<SP>1</SP> is outwardly curled, is placed thereon, Fig. 28, to form a component of a closure. In a modification, a flange (430M<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 28A, is curled upwards and outwards to form a seat for a central panel (36<SP>1</SP>) after the panel is punched free from the flange.
