A sheet metal lid for a container has four or more sides and a peripheral flange 11 formed with an externally projecting head 12 which may be above the flange edge or co-terminous with the edge, Fig. 2 (not shown). The head 12 may be discontinuous, and a second head may be formed above it, internally of the flange, in order to make the flange more rigid.
