Abstract

A crease- and wrinkle-resistant fabric comprising fibres of polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer which predominantly contains vinyl chloride monomer units, is obtained by holding the fabric under tension and maintaining it at an elevated temperature. The polyvinyl chloride is preferably of a high syndiotactic index obtained by catalysed low-temperature polymerisation between -10 DEG C. and -60 DEG C. As well as polyvinyl chloride fibres the fabric may contain natural or synthetic fibres, e.g. wool. The process may be carried out either under dry or humid conditions and the heat may be transmitted to the fabric by hot air, steam, nitrogen or radiation under infra-red rays. The temperatures used for polyvinyl chloride fibres of a high syndiotactic index are from 110 DEG C - 140 DEG C, preferably from 130 DEG C - 135 DEG C. The processing time may be from 10 seconds to 30 minutes, preferably from 1 - 10 minutes. The treatment may be continuous, e.g. performed on a stenter, or intermittent, i.e. carried out batchwise. The fabric to be processed may be unbleached or dyed. In the Example, a polyvinyl chloride fabric is darned, scoured, washed, centrifuged, dried at 90 DEG C. in a stenter, humidified, sheared, steamed to a free shrinkage and subjected to steam decatising.
