Headings DIP and D1S Woven and knitted fabrics comprising blends of wool and fibres of polyacrylonitrile or copolymers of acrylonitrile with other copolymerisable monomers are finished by a process in which the fabric is subjected to a scouring operation in an aqueous alkaline soap solution containing 3% by weight of soap and 1.5% by weight of soda, based on the weight of the fabric, at 45‹C., rinsed in water at 45‹C., gradually cooled, treated in a hydro-extractor and dried, subjected to hot-air treatment at 195‹-200‹ C. for a period of up to 25 seconds to set the polyacrylonitrile component of the fabric, cooked, rinsed in a ¢ % by weight aqueous solution of a cationic softening agent, based on the weight of the fabric, at 40‹-45‹ C., cooled gradually treated in a hydro-extractor and dried, treated by blowing steam on to it and subjected to a dry finishing treatment comprising steaming, brushing, cropping, further steaming and pressing. The scouring may be effected for 25-30 minutes and the subsequent rinsing effected for 20 minutes first at a temperature of 45‹C., the temperature being gradually reduced to room temperature to cool the fabric which is then subjected to treatment in the hydroextractor and may be dried on a stenter drying machine at 100‹C. The heat treatment at 195‹-200‹C. may be effected by blowing hot air on to the fabric which is then cooled, rinsed in the softening agent, cooled, treated in the hydroextractor, dried at 100‹C. on a stenter drying machine and then treated by blowing steam at a pressure of 20 lbs. per square inch on to the fabric for up to 2 minutes.
