Abstract
Fabric, e.g. of cotton, is impregnated by padding with an aqueous solution containing a curable treating agent, partially dried to a moisture content of 15 - 35% by weight, the treating agent is cured while the fabric is held at this moisture content and the fabric is then dried. The fabric may be rendered crease-resistant or waterproof by the process. After impregnation the fabric may be adjusted to a moisture content of 15 -35% by weight either by high pressure squeezing followed by slightly drying or by normal squeezing followed by carefully controlled extensive drying. The curing may be effected by a long-term treatment of the fabric in an open boiler, by heating the fabric to 50 DEG - 100 DEG C, winding it on a roll and placing it in a closed chamber for up to 5 hours or by passing the fabric to a through-going chamber, e.g. a ring winding chamber, at 80 DEG - 100 DEG C in dense steam conditions for 3 - 10 minutes, the curing time being reduced to one minute or less if the fabric is treated by condensation-free heating means, e.g. an infra-red heating zone, to a temperature of 100 DEG C before passing it to a through-going high-pressure steam chamber where curing is effected at a temperature above 120 DEG C. Cotton fabric may be rendered crease-resistant by treatment with a urea-formaldehyde resin precondensate.
