Abstract
A process for the production of fabrics having a crinkled or puckered appearance comprises simultaneous treatment of a fabric composed of yarns of a thermoplastic material and yarns of a non-thermoplastic material with heat, moisture and tension in the direction of the associated yarns, drying the fabric whilst still under tension and releasing the tension when the fabric is dry. The tension can be applied to either warp or weft or both, provided that it is applied to the associated yarns. The degree of tension may extend the fabric 1-10 per cent (in the case of taffeta weaves 2-5 per cent). Suitable thermoplastic yarns are cellulose acetate and other organic derivatives of cellulose, e.g. cellulose propionate, cellulose butyrate and ethyl cellulose or synthetic linear polyamide condensation products. The nonthermoplastic yarns may be regenerated cellulose, saponified cellulose esters, cotton, linen or wool. If the non-thermoplastic component consists of staple fibre yarns the latter should be of sufficiently tight construction to produce the desired regain on releasing the tension. The process can be carried out most suitably following a dyeing operation (e.g. jig dyeing) and drying on a tenter. The fabric is held on the tenter till substantially "bone-dry," i.e., its water content is equal to or less than that held in the fabric in equilibrium with the atmosphere. In an example a tightly woven taffeta of cellulose acetate warp and a weft of cellulose acetate (6 picks) and regenerated cellulose (2 picks) alternating is jig dyed and while still wet is run through a tenter adjusted to extend its width from 39 to 40 inches. The fabric may be wetted out in any aqueous bath prior to tentering or it may be treated with steam whilst in the tenter. The temperature of the tenter should be high enough to ensure that the thermoplastic material loses some of its regain on removing the tension, e.g. for cellulose acetate, 90-150 DEG C.
