Abstract
589,557. Stretching fabrics; preventing shrinkage. HAIGHTON, Ltd., V. E. and DAVIES, G. Sept. 7, 1944, No. 17097. [Class 42 (i)] Cotton &c. fabrics are prevented from substantial shrinkage on subsequent washing or by a treatment in which the wet fabric, with fibres well swelled and without longitudinal tension, is dried by the action of infra-red rays radiated from a block of refactory material heated by one or more rows of burners or elements. The plaited wet cloth A from a wagon B is drawn by rollers C and fed to the stenter chains D beneath which is positioned refractory material E<2> heated by gas burners E supplied with gas by a pipe e and air from a pump E<3> through a pipe e<1>. Air is also supplied through the pipe e<3> to a perforated pipe e<4> to remove moisture from beneath the fabric. The products of combustion in the chamber E<2> are withdrawn by a fan E<4> and passed into a drying chamber F encased at H, where the fabric is supported upon a creeper f. The dried fabric is then passed about a steam heated cylinder G, to remove creases, and finally plaited into a wagon g<1>.
