Abstract

1,069,599. Reciprocating pumps. N. BURNS. Oct. 11, 1965, No.43004/65. Heading F1A. A double-acting pump comprises a reciprocating and rotating piston 16 having two pairs of grooves 55, 56 and (57), (58), Fig. 17 (not shown), which communicate with the piston faces through passages 63, 67 and act to connect each end of the cylinder 17 alternately to supply and delivery ports 18, 19 during the reciprocating and rotating cycle. The piston is rotated by drive pulley 52 through shaft 31, ball and spline connection 32, 33, 38, sleeve 34 and shafts 30 and 29. Reciprocation is effected by engagement of a pin 41 in a slot 40 in sleeve 34. Slot 40 is shaped to give a dwell at each end of the piston stroke while the piston grooves 55, 56 move out of communication with ports 18, 19 and grooves 57, 58 move into communication with the ports and vice-versa. Since groove 55 communicates with groove 58 and groove 56 with groove 57, radial hydraulic balancing of the piston is effected. Piston rods may be provided at both ends of the piston and extend through glands in the cylinder, Fig. 19 (not shown). The pump components may be of corrosion-resisting material, examples of which are given.
