Abstract

1,068,603. Artificial respiration apparatus. C. T. CHRISTMAN. May 1, 1964 [May 1, 1963], No. 18275/64. Heading A5T. Apparatus for mouth-to-mouth artificial respiration in which oxygen at a preselected pressure is supplied to a breathing mask (19) worn by the operator and exhalations from the operator are supplied to the patient only when they are at a pressure exceeding the preselected pressure comprises a breathing mask (19) which is connected through a conduit (17) and an adjustable pressure regulator (15) to a compressed oxygen container (10), and the exhalation valve of the mask is connected by a conduit (21) and an oro-pharyngeal tube (23) to the patient. The exhalation valve comprises a seat 36 located in a partition 37 in one piece with the mask wall and a valve member 42 which is secured to a diaphragm 43 closing one side of a nipple 44. The nipple communicates through a bore 49 with an oxygen inlet passage 31 which is connected to the oxygen supply conduit (17) so that the valve member is subjected to a closing pressure equal to the pressure of oxygen supplied to the mask. The exhalations of the operator, which include carbon dioxide and water vapour added by his lungs, pass through the exhalation valve to the subject only when they are produced at a pressure exceeding that of the oxygen supplied. The pressure regulator (Fig. 5, not shown) comprises an inlet valve (65) which is opened by movement of a diaphragm (67) when the operator inhales. The position of the diaphragm is adjusted by rotation of a dial (64) linked through gears (68, 69, 71, 72) and a resilient arm (73) to the diaphragm. Adjustment of the diaphragm varies the amount by which the valve may be opened as the operator inhales, thus adjusting the pressure of oxygen flowing to the mask. The oro-pharyngeal tube is made of soft rubber and has an arcuate end portion (24), a lip guard (25) and a metal bite ring.
