Abstract

1,031,520. Artificial respiration apparatus. BLEASE ANAESTHETIC EQUIPMENT Ltd. Dec. 12, 1963 [Dec. 17, 1962], No. 47546/62. Heading A5T. Artificial respiration apparatus for supplying gas to a user at a preset tidal volume and predetermined cycling rate during normal operation, has a value which opens on spontaneous inhalation by the user to cause cessation of the cyclic operation of the apparatus and permit passage of gas to the user. A bellows 12 is supplied with respirable gas at a constant rate through a pressure regulator 28 and a needle valve 30. When the bellows is inflated to a predetermined maximum, a valve 32 is opened by an over-centre mechanism 34 actuated through a link 46 by a biased lever 20 connected to the top plate 16 of the bellows, gas then flowing to a mask 54 via a second needle valve 48 to produce an inhalation. The bellows then deflates to a predetermined minimum when the valve 32 is closed by the over-centre mechanism and exhalation is permitted. The exhalation valve 60 is diaphragm-operated and is opened when the pressure in a control chamber 64 is reduced on closure of the valve 32. In the event that the user inhales spontaneously, a negative pressure created in the user's supply conduit 51 causes a diaphragm 74 to move to open a demand valve 72. If the bellows deflates below a predetermined minimum, the top plate 16 contacts a valve member 82 which opens a valve 80 through which respirable gas is supplied directly to the bellows via the pressure regulator 28, thus by-passing the needle valve 30. A blowoff valve 70 permits escape of gas to the atmosphere through a whistle 73 if the pressure in the mask rises above a predetermined maximum e.g. due to an obstruction in the user's lungs.
