In a reactor for contacting oil with particles containing an alkaline-acting metal, its alloy, or hydroxide the oil is introduced through a jet orifice 8, which is directed towards a curved zone 2 of a reactor 1 containing the particles, with sufficient velocity to cause a tumbling and self-abrading motion, the treated oil being withdrawn through a tube 5 having a larger inlet 6 than the orifice 8. The reactor may be a horizontally disposed cylindrical chamber 10 (Fig. 2, not shown) with the oil inlet orifice entering tangentially into the cylinder. To increase rate of abrasion, abrading members can be attached to the inside of the chamber, the interior surface roughened, or the surface coated with a layer containing particles of the metal. The particles preferably comprise, an alloy of Li, Na and K with at least one of Zn, Al, Sn, Pb, Bi, Mg, or alternatively an alloy of Li and/or Na with at least one of the alkaline earth metals or magnesium. The metal or alloy may be dispersed in a non-metallic abradable matrix, e.g. a wax, polymer or soap.
