Abstract

Oil is passed through a zone containing particles in tumbling and self-abrading motion, said particles comprising metallic Li, Na, K, Ca, Sr, Ba, or alloys thereof, said metal being at least 15 volume per cent of the particles, or consisting of the hydroxides of said metals. Suitablel alloying metals are Zn, Al, Sn, Pb, Sb, Bi, Mg, and the alkaline earth metals. The metal or its alloy may be dispersed in a solid matrix such as a polyolefin, a wax, a polyolefin-wax blend, a thermosetting resin, or a hard surface-active agent, such as a lithium or barium soap. The process may be effected in a reactor, with a jet through which the oil enters, containing the particles, with desirably at least part of the interior of the reactor being coated with an abrasive layer or with a layer of the reactive particles.
