Abstract

[Also in Division G3] The depth of oil in a container 1 (Fig. 1, not shown) is measured and/or controlled by probes (4, 5, 6) which discharge air into the container at different levels to counterbalance the deep and shallow liquid heads and the gas pressure in the tank top, the probes being connected to water and mercury manometers (12, 11) respectively, as well as to control devices (22) which include tiltable means operating a pneumatic relay (23) controlling an hydraulic valve (24) in an actuator circuit for a valve (2) through which oil is supplied to the tank. Valves (13, 14) control the manometer connections and valves (19, 20) the connections to the devices (22). The manometer limbs may be vented by valves (13A, 14A). The valve (13, 14) and (19, 20) are arranged in pairs each pair being in a common housing; each valve has an annular inlet 40, Fig. 2,-between a tubular spigot 34 and a plug 30 splined thereto, that leads to a space 41 between a stainless-steel bellows 33 and a spigot sleeve 35, the bellows joining the plug 30' to a movable closure element 29 having a conical surface that co-operates with an " 0 "- ring on the sleeve 35. The outlet is formed through the spigot 34 whilst each inlet 40. is open to a common-probe connection 43. The valves are operated from a member 49 through a cam 47 which enables one valve only to be opened at a time. Other scales may be provided to facilitate measurement of the specific gravity of the oil and the gas pressure or vacuum in the top of the tank.
