Abstract

743,393. Fluid-actuated valves. EASTMAN INTERNATIONAL, CO. Dec. 18, 1953, No. 35312/53. Class 135. A valve for maintaining a predetermined level of liquid within a tank comprises a twopart housing 20, 25 having a partition 28 supporting a removable seat ring 30, and a flow passage connected at one end 21 to the bottom of the tank and at its other end 22 to discharge. The seat 30 coacts with a diaphragm valve member 24 clamped around its edges between the housing parts 20, 25 and loaded by a spring 45. A diaphragm 37 having an effective diameter equal to that of the outside diameter of the seat 30 is held against the bottom of the partition 28 by a closure cap 39. Holes 43 through the cap 39 expose the under surface of the diaphragm 37 to the gas and liquid pressure in the tank, and a pipe G connects the gas space in the tank to the space above the valve member 24 so that in either the open or closed position of the valve the gas pressure is balanced out, the pressure head of the liquid in the tank being opposed only by the spring. Two such valves are used in emulsifying apparatus, wherein e.g. oil and water are separated either by heat or chemically. The apparatus comprises a centre tank in which the liquids separate and two side tanks in which the separate liquids are collected. Each side tank is associated with one of the valves which opens when the liquid level in the tank reaches a predetermined height.
