Abstract

In a speed-frame flyer, to minimise the variation in the effect of the counterweight on the presser-foot as the package grows, the counterweight is arranged at such an angle relatively to the foot that the "leverage distance" of the centrifugal force acting at the centre of gravity of the counterweight, and the distance of the centre of gravity of the foot from the axis of rotation of the flyer increase in the same ratio. The "leverage distance" at any instant is defined as the distance from the pivot of the foot to the centre of gravity of the counterweight when projected on the tangent at the pivot to the circle of rotation of the pivot. In a preferred arrangement, as the foot pivots outwardly, the angle between the tangent and the line joining the pivot and the centre of gravity of the counterweight decreases from 60 degrees to 18 degrees. In the forms described, the counterweight is disposed within the flyer arm, the cross-section of which is of streamlined form. In Fig. 3, (not shown), the counterweight is of lead and the arm and foot of aluminium: the counterweight and foot are cast together and mounted on pins rotatably received in upper and lower bores in the arm. The roving is conducted through a steel-lined bore with a threading-slot. In Fig. 5, (not shown), the counterweight and foot are attached to a tube through which the roving is conducted, a threading-slot in the tube registering with a slot in the arm when the foot is pivoted away from the spool.
