Abstract

809,014. Centrifugal brakes. KLINGBERG, A.I. Nov. 27,1956 [Dec. 15, 1955], No. 36311/56. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group VI] A centrifugal brake on a fishing reel (see Group VI) comprises a brake block 10 pivoted on a pin 11 secured to the spool 2 and having a brake shoe 13 adapted to engage the outer peripheral surface of a collar 4 on the frame 1 of the reel. The braking power is adjusted by a screw 14 which screws into the brake block and has a head 15 constituting a weight and projecting through a radial slot 16 in the top 6 of the spool; the braking power is increased as the screw 14 is unscrewed. The screw 14 can be screwed in far enough to locate the centre of gravity of the assembly of brake block and screw below the level of the pivot pin 11 and in this position there is no braking effect. In a modification the brake shoe engages the inner peripheral surface of the collar 4 and in a further modification the brake shoe engages the concave wall of the frame. In both these modifications the braking power is decreased by unscrewing the screw 14. In the reel shown in Fig. 5 the pivoted brake block 50 is mounted in one of the cup-shaped discs of the spool and co-operates with a brake drum 53 secured to the frame. The brake adjusting screw 54 is accessible to a screwdriver through an opening 55 in the frame. As the screw is unscrewed the braking power increases. In a modification the brake shoe is located near the other end of the block and consequently the braking power decreases as the screw is unscrewed.
