Abstract

In a multiple twist doubling spindle having a loaded flyer rotatable about the central hollow spindle ,5 there is around spindle 5, beneath the flyer, an annular housing 11 at least partially filled with liquid containing an impeller 19 which rotates with the flyer. The . rotation of the impeller in the liquid thus prevents surges in the motion of the flyer. As shown the housing 11 may be totally enclosed and the drive between impeller and flyer established by magnetic means: alternatively, " as in Fig. 1 not shown, the liquid housing may be open at the top and the impeller directly mounted on the flyer. To vary the drag imposed on the flyer the liquid in the container may be changed or the level of the liquid changed to alter the degree of immersion of the impeller blades. This can be done by making the whole, see Fig. 5 not shown, or part, see Figs. 6, 6a, 6b not shown, of the floor of the liquid containing vessel vertically adjustable. In a further form, Fig. 1 not shown, the impeller blades may be rotatably adjustable each about an axis parallel to the spindle axis so as to provide a further drag adjusting means.
