Description
Nov. 23, 1943. E. E. Bll'rfrs, JR 2,334,748
'SPINDLE BRAKE Filed Sept. 29, 1942 v I7 'llaga INVENTOR @www ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 23, 1943 SPINDLE BRAKE l Emmett E. Britta, Jr., Kerns, Vas assignor to Celanes'e Corporation of America, a corporation of Delaware Application September 29, 1942, Serial No. 460,083 s claims. `(c1. 51-89) This invention relates to a 'spindle brake, and relates more particularly to a portable spindle brake adapted to be carried by the operator in charge of a bank of spindles and to be applied by the operator as required on any spindle vof said bank for the purpose of stopping the rotation thereof.
An important object of this invention is the .provision of a portable brake for stopping the rotation of a spindle whereby the use of the hand of the operator or the provision of a separate,
obviated.
Another object of this invention is to provide a portable spindle brake Whichnot only stops the rotation of the spindle but also moves the spindle away from the drive belt and other parts of the machine thus permitting the bobbin to be removed from the spindle without the danger of striking the same on any part of the machine.
A further object of this invention is to provide a portable spindle brake which cooperates with standard spindle machine elements to perform its intended functions.
- Other objects of this invention will appear from the following detailed description and drawing.
In the drawing wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is shown, A
Figure 1 is a plan view of the portable spindle brake of my invention shown in operative position, only so much of the spindle structure and bobbin being shown as to demonstrate the operation of the brake, and
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the spindle brake and spindle structure.
. permanently mounted brake for each spindle is Like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout both views of the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing for' a detailed description of my invention, the reference numeral l indicates the spindle swing step bracket normally attached to the frame (not shown) of a multiple spindle spinning machine. As is wellknown, these multiple spindle spinning machines may consist of banks of 10, 25, 50 or more spindles and they may be employed in winding operations or in winding and twisting operations to produce yarn packages of any desired type. Formed integral with the bracket i is a well 2 having an extending rim 3 provided with an upstanding ear i containing a locking screw 5. Mounted in the well 2 is a hollow shaft 6 having its free or upper end formed into a `swing step l'. A spring t and a knurled thumb nut s are provided to exert a selected force on the swing step referred to above, locks the thumb nut 9 in the selected position, to exert the desired tension on the spring 8.
The free end of swing step 'l is offset and forms a platform ii with an opening in which .a bolster i2 is iixedly mounted. The bolster l2 is provided with a nut or flanged portion I3 adapted to rest on the platform Ii 'and is provided with a threaded end lli around which is carried a compression spring l5 held in place by a nut I6. The bolster may be of any of the commercial types and is equipped with bearings and lubricating channels for journaling and llubricating a spindle I1. as is well understood in the art. The spindle i1 has a spool shaped portion or whorl i8 that is adapted to be frictionally driven by a belt I9 when in operative position. A bobbin, pirn, spool or other suitable yarn holder 2| for receiving the yarn is mounted on the spindle Il.
The portable brake of my invention, which is generally indicated by reference numeral 22, is constructed and arranged to cooperate with the shaft 6 to swing the spindle on the arc of they swing step away from the drive belt I9 and to frictionally stop the rotation of the spindle. To this end the brake, which is ofbent form, is provided with a pin 23 at its bend 24. The bend 2l in the brake forms the same into a handle 25 and a lever 2t of shorter length than the handle, the handle and lever forming an angle of less than with each other. This construction of the brake prevents the operators hand from coming into contact with an adjacent spindle. However, for different types of machines the angle may be varied to suit. The free end of the lever arm 26 terminates in an arc-shaped brake shoe 2l that may be lined with leather 28 or other friction material. The pin i3 is adapted to be received with a loose iit in oil hole 29 in shaft 6 wherein it is journaled for pivotal movement..
To operate the brake, the operator inserts the pin 23 of the brake in the oil hole 29 of the hollow shaft [i with the lined face 28 of. the brakel frictionally engaging the whorl I8. The handle 25 is moved counter-clockwise as viewed in Figure 1. This action swings the spindle away from the drive belt, frictionally stops its rotation and positions it so that the yarn package may be removed therefrom without its striking yarn guides, frame or other parts of the spinning machine.
It is to be understood that the foregoing detailed description is merely given by way of illustration and that many variations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my 1 in a clockwise direction. The locking screw 8, 55 invention.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
1. A portable brake adapted to stop the rotation of a spindle assembly provided with an oil well and swing the spindle on the arc of its swing step, comprising a handle, a lever arm extending at an angle from the handle, a brake shoe at the free end oi said lever arm, and a pin at the junction of the handle and lever arm, said pin being adapted to be inserted inthe oil well of a spindle swing step.
2. A portable brake adapted to stop the rotaftion of a spindle assembly provided with an oil wellv and swing the spindle onthe arc of its swing step,
comprising a handle, a lever arm extending at an angle of less than 90 from the handle, a brake shoe at the' free end of said lever arm, and a pin at the junction of the handle and lever arm, said pin being adapted to be inserted in the oil well of e, spindle swing step.
3. A portable brake adapted to stop the rotation of a spindle assembly provided with an oil well and swing the spindle on the arc of its swing step, comprising a handle, a lever arm extending at an angle from the handle, an arc shaped brake 25 shoe at the free end of said lever arm, and a pin at the Junction oi! the handle and levervarm, said pin being adapted to be inserted in of a spindle swing step.
4. A portable brake adapted to stop the rotation of a spindle assembly provided with an oil well and swing the spindle on the arc of its swing lstep, comprising a handle, a lever'arm extending at an angle from the handle, a brake shoe at the free end of said lever arm, and a pin at the Junction of the handle and lever arm, said pin being adapted to be insertedwith a loose ilt in the oil well of a spindle swing step.
5. A portable brake adapted to stop the roter" tion ot a spindle assembly provided with an oil well and swing the spindle on the arc of its swing step, comprising a handle, a. lever arm extending at an angle of less than 90 from the handle. an arc shaped brake shoe atV the free end of said lever arm, a lining on said brakey shoe, and a pin at the Junction of the handle and lever arm, said pin being adapted to be inserted in the oil well of the spindle swing step.
