Abstract
1,061,884. Toggle press. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. March 2, 1964 [Oct. 25, 1963], No. 8782/64. Addition to 1,039,606. Heading B5A. In a toggle operated moulding press, material is compressed in a mould 16, 17 from above and below simultaneously by rams 4 and 6, the rams moving over the same distance during the compression operation. As shown in the Figure, ram 4 is carried by a cross-piece 3 itself carried at the lower end of columns 2 slidable through the press frame 1, and ram 6 is carried by a slide 5 slidable along the columns. The rams are actuated by two double lever toggle systems having arms 12, 13 of unequal lengths, each pair of said arms being pivoted at B and A respectively to slide 5 and columns 2 respectively, and being actuated by a piston-operated rod 10. After the idle stroke in which the lower ram is stationary and the upper ram is moved downward into contact with the working material. The points of articulation P of the toggle levers and the rods 10 are so restricted that during the subsequent compression stroke the rams move over equal distances. In the embodiment shown in the left-hand side of the Figure, the articulation point P is guided along an arcuate path during the compression stroke by a holding rod 32 which moves freely through an articulation cup 37 during the idle stroke but which is pivoted, by abutment of the cup with nut M mounted on the rod, about the cup during said compression stroke. By altering the position of cup 37 and the effective length of rod 32, the point in the stroke at which the movement of P is monitored can be adjusted thus affording a control of the distance moved by the rams. In the embodiment shown in the right-hand side of the Figure the holding rod is replaced by a piston-rod slidable within a cylinder pivoted about the press frame 1. In a third embodiment the articulation point P is guided during the appropriate part of the stroke by a bar having suitable arcuate cam surfaces (see Fig. 4, not shown). In a fourth embodiment the required movement is imparted to the point P by a horizontally acting piston-rod horizontally slidable within a cylinder carried by the lower end of a piston-and-cylinder mechanism 7, 8, 9.
