Abstract

1320483 Metal working presses; cupping COORS PORCELAIN CO 7 June 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 19272/71 Headings B3H and B3Q A crank operated metal working press has a ram carriage 26 connected by a rod 23 to an assembly 20 which converts the angular thrust of a connecting rod 19 on the crank arm 16 into a thrust in a straight line along the path of travel of the carriage. The assembly 20 comprises a movable two part crosshead 21, 22, Fig. 1, pivoted at axes 57, 58 equally spaced from their central axis 24 to two pairs of levers 55, 56 which are pivoted at their other ends 59, 60 to the press frame. The connecting rod 19 has a bifurcated end which extends circumferentially around the crosshead and the rod 23 is positioned between the arms. The ram carriage 26 is guided by eccentrically adjustable rollers 30 above and below guide strips (36), Fig. 3 (not shown). The guide surfaces of the strips 36 are arranged radially from the centre of gravity of the carriage to reduce movement of the carriage transversely due to heating. The ram 27 is mounted to extend through a further carriage 41 which has a sleeve 40 coaxial with the ram. The sleeve is moved forward after it has been loaded with a cup-shaped blank against a tool pack housing 65 which includes ironing dies by a pair of parallel rods 42 pivoted to a pair of levers 46 moved by a pair of cams 50 on the press crankshaft. The pressure of the sleeve 40 on the blank is adjustable by a stop screw 75. The rods 42 are retracted by an air cylinder 66 which keeps the cam followers 48 on the cams 50. The ram pushes the blank through the tool pack and the sleeve and ram are retracted in turn.
