622,938. Forging-machines; dies. COMPAGNIE DES FORGES ET ACIERIES DE LA MARINE & D'HOMECOURT. Aug. 20, 1946, No. 24747. Convention date, Dec. 7, 1944. [Class 83 (iv)] Making crank shafts.-Apparatus for forging articles such as crank shafts comprising enlarged parts separated by constrictions, comprises end dies to receive the extremities of the blank and two central half-dies acting transversely for the lateral displacement of part of the blank, the end dies being moved together during the downward movement of the central die by means of ramps associated with the central die and engaging ramps associated with each of the end dies. The apparatus comprises a bed 1 with guideways along which may move cradles 3 supporting the lower halves. of dies 9 adapted to hold the work at each side of the portion to be forged. The bed also comprises a central cylinder in which operates a piston 4 carrying the lower part 10 of a central die, the upper part 11 of which is carried by a crosshead 2 adapted to be moved downwardly by a ram. Pistons 5 operating in the crosshead serve to force the upper parts of the workholding dies 9 into contact with the work, the pressure in the cylinders being limited by spring-controlled exhaust valvos. In operation, and starting from the position shown in Fig. 1, pressure fluid is admitted to the cylinders of the pistons 5 so that the work is firmly gripped by the dies 9. The cross-head is then moved downwardly so that ramps 17 depending from each side thereof engage corresponding ramps 16 formed on the outer ends of each of the workholding dies. Thus as the portion of the work gripped between the dies 10 and 11 is moved bodily downwards against the pressure of the cushioning piston 4, the dies 9 are moved together. After the forging operation and the withdrawal of the ram pressure from the crosshead, the parts are returned to their original positions by other fluid actuated pistons such as the pistons 8 serving to raise the cross-head.
