Abstract

[Also in Divisions B4-B5] In a metal powder compression moulding press, a fixed lower die 37 and a displaceable upper die 14 co-operate with a matrix 1 which is simultaneously downwardly displaceable by a mechanism which is actuated from the compression movement of the upper die 14, and is adjustable in a continuously variable manner to vary the speed of the downward displacement of the matrix 1. The downward displacement of the matrix 1 is effected by a bar 15 which is connected to move with the upper die 14 and abuts blocks 16 at the end of a rocking lever 6, which is pivoted at 7 to the press framework and is connected by a link 3 to the die 14. The link 3 is pivotally attached to the lever 6 at a member 8 which is adjustably displaceable along the lever 6, to vary the speed of descent of the die 14, via a spindle 9, gears 13, splined sleeve and shaft 12, 11, and gears 10. The length of the link 3 is adjustable to vary the point at which the bar 15 engages the blocks 16, via a turnbuckle 17, driven by gears 20 and splined sleeve and shaft 19, 18. The extent of descent of the matrix 1 is limited by the abutment of the lever 16 against a stop 21 which is linearly reciprocable into and out of the stopping position by a cam 26, acting via a compression spring 27 loaded link 22 and lever 24 connection. Upward movement of the matrix 1 with the plunger 14 is prevented by an arcuately reciprocated catch 30, actuated also by the cam 26, via a tension spring 35 loaded bell crank lever 32 and link 36 connection. After the die 14 has been raised, the stop 21 is retracted by the cam 26, and the die 14 is lowered for ejection of the moulded article (by lower ram 37) by a cam 26a acting on the rod 2, via a compression spring 40 urged linked lever arrangement 38, 39, the cam 26 then permitting arcuate displacement of the catch 30 from the path of the lever 6, as the cam 26a permits the upward return of the matrix 14 by the action of the compression spring 40 in the lever 39.
