1,061,830. Hydraulic turbines; centrifugal pumps. VEREINIGTE ÍSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE A. G. Dec. 30, 1965 [Jan. 5, 1965], No. 55290/65. Headings F1C and F1T. In order to permit a hydraulic machine of the Francis type to operate at substantially optimum efficiency when run as a turbine or a pump, the rotor blades 4 each have a separate radially outer portion 4a which is retracted into a cylinder 6 carried by one of the rotor shrouds 2, 3, when the machine operates as a turbine. The cylinder 6 may be annular and provided with an annular actuating piston 7, or each portion 4a may be associated with an independent actuating piston and cylinder. Each portion 4a may be divided and associated with annular cylinders on both shrouds 2, 3. Pressure oil and/or water is supplied through conduits 8 in the shaft 1, an annular chamber 9 and conduits 10, 11 to actuate the piston 7. The latter may be constantly subjected on its upper side to the pressure in the pressure water conduit or the interior of the machine, and controlled by varying the pressure on its lower side. When extended the portions 4a engage slots in the shroud 2, which are closed by spring-biased members 12 when the portions 4a are retracted.
