996,182. Axial-flow pumps; hydraulic turbines. ESCHER WYSS A.G. Jan. 15, 1962 [Jan. 13, 1961], No. 1427/62. Headings F1C and F1T. [Also in Division B7] A variable pitch bladed hub e.g. a Kaplan turbine or pump, has blades 3 which are adjusted by axial movement of a rod 7 disposed within the shaft 5 and moved by a piston 6. A space 4 within the hub is supplied with oil under pressure from a reservoir 17, through a pipe 16 and ports 14 and 12. The end 21 of the rod 7, which is of substantially the .same diameter as the rod, is arranged for movement in a further space 18 within the hub which is closed off from the surrounding water and connected with the space 4 through a check valve 19 disposed in a conduit 20 which only allows oil to pass from the space 18 to the space 4. The arrangement ensures that changes in oil pressure within the hub 2, caused by axial movement of the rod 7, only take place within the sealed space 18.
