Abstract

692,403. Variable-pitch propellers. LIAAEN, N. J. Nov. 16, 1951. [Nov. 16, 1950] No. 27005/51. Class 114. In a variable-pitch marine propeller in which the propeller hub is lubricated by oil supplied thereto under pressure which also acts to reduce the ingress of sea water, the intake of the return flow passage 7 for the oil is located at or near the wall of the hub where the distance of the wall from the axis of the hub is a maximum. Any sea water which may enter the hub will thus be removed therefrom by centrifugal action. The oil is supplied to the hub from a reservoir 17 by a pump 16 through passages 25, 29, 30, 31, 33, and the annular space between a tube 20 and a pitchchange rod 4. The oil is returned through passage 7, an annular passage 5<SP>1</SP> surrounding the tube 20, and passages 21, 22, 17<SP>1</SP>. The blades are adjusted through the rod 4 by a servomotor piston 45. The propeller shaft bearing liners 10, 11 are supplied with lubricant from a tank 35. In another embodiment the tube 20 is omitted and the return passages are provided by axial passages or grooves in the bearing liners. A tank is also inserted in the return line for separating out any sea water which may be present in the oil. Alternatively, the oil may be conveyed to or from the hub through a bore in the rod 4. Specification 609,009 is referred to.
