1,077,492. Hydraulic turbine plant. J. M. VOITH G. m. b. H. Feb. 14, 1966 [Feb. 18, 1965], No. 6454/66. Heading F1T. A vertically disposed machine set for a pumpedstorage power plant comprises a motor-generator, a pump-turbine and an auxiliary turbine for starting the machine set for pump operation. The auxiliary turbine is of the radial outward flow reaction type, receiving its driving water through a conduit 5 from the main pressure pipe of the machine set. The auxiliary turbine is adjusted to the synchronous speed of the motor-generator by governing means controlling an inlet valve 6 or adjustable inlet guide vanes (not shown) in place of the stationary guide vanes 7. In addition the auxiliary turbine may be used for braking the machine set during turbine operation of the pump-turbine. During normal running of the machine set the auxiliary turbine is isolated by valves 6, 9, and drained and ventilated by valves 10, 11 to reduce losses, a passage 12 and non-return valve 13 providing the necessary communication between the upper and lower chambers of the turbine. The auxiliary turbine may be arranged beneath or between the pump-turbine and motor-generator. The hydraulic lift on the runner of the auxiliary turbine relieves the load on the thrust bearing of the machine set and thereby helps in overcoming the initial break-away torque at starting.
