Abstract

An hydraulic reaction turbine, or pump-turbine, alternator set control system comprises means to maintain the runner spiral casing substantially full of water when the set is operating at synchronous speed with the penstock main valve and the runner adjustable guide vanes closed and the runner operating substantially in air, the water pressure being only a fraction of the normal working head, and means responsive to the opening of the main valve so that the adjustable guide vanes begin to open in advance of complete opening of the valve, the maximum flow area of the valve being at least twice that of the guide vanes and the flow-area of the vanes at no time exceeding that of the valve. An hydraulic turbine, or pump-turbine, alternator set comprises an alternator 12 connected to a runner 10 mounted within a spiral casing 15 fed from a penstock 13 through a main valve 14. Adjustable guide vanes 18 are controlled by a servomotor 42, Fig. 2 (not shown), through rod 41 and ring 40. A servomotor 22 controls the main valve 14 which has main and secondary by-pass valves 27, 29 respectively. When the runner 10 is being driven in air at synchronous speed by the alternator 12 with the guide vanes 18 and main and by-pass valves, 14, 27 closed, cooling water is supplied through pipe 30, air through pipe 34 to the draft tube 19 and water at a pressure slightly above atmospheric through by-pass 28 so as to offset the leakage from casing 15 through the vanes 18 and maintain the casing full of water. When the set is to be brought on load, by-pass valve 27. is opened to equalise the pressures in the penstock 13 and casing 15. Pressure switch 44, Fig. 2, then initiates operation of servomotor 22 to open main valve 14 which at a given opening closes electrical switch 51, by cam 50 attached to the shaft 24 of the valve, to energize control 43 of the guide vane servomotor 42. The guide vanes 18 begin to open until cam 56 on operating rod 41 opens switch 55 to de-energize control 43 and stop the opening of the vanes 18. Valve 14 continues to open and cam 50 closes switch 54 which energizes control 43 so that the vanes 18 start to open again. Should cam 50 close switch 54, before cam 56 opens switch 55, the opening of the vanes 18 will be continuous. Secondary by-pass valve 29 closes when vanes 18 are open. In the embodiment described, the maximum flow area of valve 14 is five times the maximum flow area of vanes 18. At no time does the flow area of the vanes 18 exceed that of the valve 14. A vent valve 31, level indicating switch 33 and an over-flow 45 are also provided.
