Abstract

1,183,028. Hydraulic turbines. VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE A.G. Nov.4, 1968 [Nov.22, 1967], No.52103/68. Heading F1T. A hydraulic turbomachine which can be selectively operated as a turbine or as a pump has axially spaced guide vane rings 7, 8 for pump or turbine operation, respectively, and a rotor consisting of an annular bladed member 10 and an inner bladed member 12, the latter being axially movable from a position in which its blades 13 act as turbine blades to a position in which its blades co-operate with the blades 11 of member 10 to act as pump blades. Member 10 is fixed to the rotor shaft 9 and inner member 12 is fixed to an auxiliary shaft 14 mounted within shaft 9 for rotation therewith and axial movement relative thereto. The latter movement is effected by controlling the supply of oil to either side of a piston 16 slidable in a chamber 15 of shaft 9. In the right half of Fig. 2 the inner member 12 is shown in its lower position in alignment with guide vane ring 8 for turbine operation. A set of adjustable guide vanes 8a is also provided. The annular member 10 also has a lower set of rotor blades 19 in alignment with vanes 8, 8a for turbine operation. When pump operation is required, inner member 12 is moved to its upper position, shown in the left half of Fig. 2, in which its blades 13 co-operate with the blades 11 of member 10 to discharge past guide vane ring 7. The pump and turbine volutes 2, 3 are separated by a wall 1 having an inner hollow extension 21 forming a shroud for the guide vanes 8a and part of the rotor blades 11. The cavity within extension 21 may be used for draining the rotor area. The volutes 2, 3 communicate with separate pipes (4, 5, Fig. 3 not shown), each having a shut-off valve (6). Inner member 12 carries a cylindrical member 18 so that it connects with suction pipe 17 in both its upper and lower positions. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), lower rotor blades 19 are eliminated. Member 10 may have a larger number of blades than inner member 12.
