Abstract

704,856. Centrifugal and axial-flow compressors ; gas turbine plant. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. July 23, 1951 [April 24, 1950], No. 10101/50. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3) In a compressor comprising a multi-stage axial-flow section followed by, and drivingly connected to, a centrifugal section, stator blading at the inlet end of the axial-flow section is adjustable to increase the whirl imposed on the air in the lower portion of the speed range. In a gas turbine engine, the compressor comprises an axial-flow impeller 18 followed by a centrifugal impeller 20, both mounted on a shaft 15 connected to the turbine rotor. Guide blades 22 and 23a and diffuser blades 24 are pivoted, preferably simultaneously, by means of hydraulic rams 29, 30 and 37 respectively so that on acceleration of the engine, the whirl imposed on the air by the blades 22 is decreased, the whirl imposed by the blades 23a is increased, and the areas of the diffuser channels between the blades 24 are decreased. In each set of blades, the blades are interconnected for simultaneous adjustment, as by means of radius arms 26 engaging slots in a rotatable ring 27, and pinions 35 meshing with a toothed ring 36. The rams may be similar to those described in Specification 704,849, in which the ram pistons withdraw into the ram cylinders as the rotational speed of the compressor increases. The control may be in accordance with factors which vary with the rotational speed, such as the compression ratio across the whole or a part of the compressor, or the corrected rotational speed (corrected, that is, for variations of compressor intake temperature as by including in the hydraulic governor system an orifice area controlled in accordance with the intake temperature). Instead of being continuous over a range of speed, the blade adjustment may be effected at a preselected speed.
