Abstract

1,044,408. Combined cartons and reels. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Aug. 13, 1965 [Aug. 14, 1964], No. 33221/64. Headings B8M and B8P. A combined carton and reel is formed from two identical blanks, each blank comprising a central portion 2 having flaps 4 and a transverse strip 11 defined by slits 10, wing portions 3 and retaining tabs 14. The flaps 4, having fingers 6, are folded up to form, with the portion 2, a semi-cylindrical body, and then wing portions 3 are folded up to form the flanges of one half of a reel. On folding up the wing portions, the transverse strip 11 is forced up out of the plane of the central portion 2 to form a tie, and leave a hole 12, Fig. 2b (not shown), the wing portions 3 being glued or stapled to this tie to retain them in position. Alternatively, they may be retained by the co-operation of ears on the flaps 4 with slits in the wing portions. Two identically folded blanks are then glued together to form a reel. After winding wire &c. on to the reel, the retaining tabs 14 are folded in to cover the wire, and tongues 15 carried by some tabs interlock with slits 16 in the others, adhesive tape 19, Fig. 3 (not shown), then being applied around the periphery of the reel. The hub of the reel may be strengthened by the insertion of metal rods in holes 18. The two blanks may be held together by the winding on of the wire. The flaps 4 may have holes 7 to receive the leading end of the wire.
