Abstract

1,093,049. Collapsible reels. S. L. EIFRID. Nov. 25, 1964 [Nov. 26, 1963], No. 47958/64. Heading B8M. A collapsible reel comprises end flanges 23 and a framework core 22 attached to and foldable between the end flanges, Fig. 27. The reel may be cardboard and assembled from two annular discs having radially inwardly extending fingers, of two different lengths, which may be bent at right angles to the plane of the disc at their junctions with the disc; the longer fingers are scored at a distance from the disc, corresponding to half the distance between the flanges of the assembled reel. The discs are placed concentrically one on top of the other and the longer fingers are bent over and secured to the shorter fingers, the reel being formed by pulling the discs apart until the fingers are fully extended. The core may be formed from cardboard strips 73<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 27, extending between the end flanges, passing through holes in the end flanges and being secured to the outer surfaces thereof, the strips being scored midway between the flanges, as at 78<SP>1</SP> to ensure folding. In a further embodiment, Figs. 15-22, these strips are provided with reinforcing flaps. A reinforcing strip may be wound round the core prior to the winding of wire etc., to prevent the reel from folding when in use.
